The Games just ended in a tie — four times over
Archery at the 2026 Asian Games wrapped on October 3 in Okazaki, and the story of the week wasn't dominance, it was nerve. Three of India's four archery golds came down to a shoot-off or a one-point margin, the kind of finish where a single arrow decides a medal color.
Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod won individual recurve gold with a shoot-off arrow closer to center than South Korea's Oh Yejin after the match ended 5-5 — India's first individual recurve Asian Games title. The mixed compound team of Sahil Jadhav and Chikitha Taniparthi beat Korea in another shoot-off, and that win doubled as a Los Angeles 2028 Olympic quota place.
Compound team finals, by the numbers
- Women's team d. China — 238–234
- Men's team d. China — 238–237
- Mixed team d. Korea — shoot-off
The women's compound score equaled a world record South Korea set at the 2014 Asian Games — a reminder that compound archery's ceiling keeps getting matched, not raised, by whoever shows up calmest. Not every final went the same way: in recurve men's team, Korea's Lee Woo-seok, Kim Je-deok, and Kim Woo-jin closed it out 5-1, no shoot-off required. India left Okazaki with nine medals across ten events — five gold, two silver, two bronze — matching its Hangzhou 2023 tally, but with a different cast; 2023 individual compound champion Ojas Deotale didn't make this year's squad after finishing fifth at trials.
Three golds by a single arrow. That's not a streak — that's a sport getting tighter at the top.
Off the line: the politics caught up with the schedule
Away from the target, World Archery's August bulletin carried the governance story of the year: the federation lifted its restrictions on Russian athletes, teams, and officials, reopening a path back into international competition that's been closed since 2022. The same bulletin confirmed Gold Coast will host the 2027 World Archery Para Championships, and laid out a revised 2027 Hyundai Indoor World Series with new format rules.
There was a harder note too: two-time Olympian and World Games champion Denisa Hurbanová Baránková died on June 22 at 24, a loss the recurve community is still absorbing going into this autumn's events.
What's actually on the line this month
October doesn't let up. Here's what's drawing now, by date:
- Oct 13–18 — Hyundai World Archery Para Series, Santiago, Chile — stage four of five, no results yet.
- Oct 14–18 — South American Youth & Masters Championships, Ecuador.
- Oct 17–18 — Arizona State Outdoor Championships, Phoenix — USA Archery's regional season closer.
- Oct 19–24 — Asian Para Games, Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
- Oct 21–27 — Para Pan American Championships, Lima — the key qualifier for the 2027 Lima Para Pan American Games.
- Oct 25–30 — Hyundai World Archery Para Series, Sulaymaniyah, Iraq — postponed from its original date.
- Oct 30–Nov 1 — Swiss Open, Lausanne.
- Oct 31–Nov 13 — Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games — 64 archery quota places, allocated across 38 nations.
Worth watching in Lima: with the Dubai Para Series already pushed to December and Sulaymaniyah shuffled later in October, the 2027 Para Pan American qualification picture is more compressed than usual, which raises the stakes on every Lima result.
Next up: results out of Santiago and Lima, plus whatever the Youth Olympic field in Dakar does with 64 quota places split across 38 flags.
